Cichlids of South and Central America
Description: These are neotropical freshwater fish of the Class Teleostomi (bony fishes), the Order Perciformes (perch-like fish) and Family Cichlidae. It is believed that many of these species evolved from marine ancestors and are related to marine species such as damselfishes, wrasses and viviparous surfperches. Cichlids represent one of the most diverse and dominant groups of fishes throughout Central and South America and Africa.
